Springboard Curriculum for 8th grade
Students studied Joseph Campbell's archetype of a Hero's Journey and read the book, The Giver. Working with a partner they created a visual representation, in the form of a graphic novel or animation, illustrating Jonas’s journey in relationship to the hero’s journey archetype.
To complete the project students used the program GoAnimate to create characters and settings. They then wrote dialogue. As part of the assessment they had to include camera angles such as close up, extreme close up, and wide angle.

Their task was to:
1. Connect Jonas’s journey to the hero’s journey archetype. They may or may not use all the steps in a stage of the hero’s journey, but they had to use at least two steps from each stage.
2. Create a sequence of animations for Jonas’s journey that consists of approximately 6–8 scenes (one per step). They needed to make sure that their graphics accurately represent the steps in the archetypal pattern
of the hero’s journey. They had to purposefully use a variety of framing and angle techniques to create variety and interest in the scene, and choose color and detail that support their purpose.
3. Create at least one dialogue sequence in each animation to further establish the connection to the hero’s journey. include relevant and accurate quotations from the novel that reflect insights about the journey. You
may also incorporate quotations from the novel as narrative.
